Oh, Bill… wondrous Bill.
Here is my dear friend Bill, at the December CFI meeting, "making an analogy" during a debate on what a good secular humanist needs to do. He is reading a typical scam email that many receive proposing a large monetary deposit at one’s bank account. These scams usually come from Africa (or so they claim), hence Bill’s attire. His argument was that one only needs to point out that this is a scam, that additional financial advice on what constitutes sound investments is logically superfluous.
Hard to disagree, and logicians everywhere would rejoice with Bill’s succinct style. Gill (in the dark suit) gave a counter-argument: that one needs to do more in a diverse and multi-cultural society; that one needs to speak up so the rights of secular folk are not trampled by anyone who tries to impose their worldview on others, or unnecessarily impede scientific inquiry, or limit freedoms, and so on. I agree with Bill on the logic, but I think Gill is right on what needs to be done.
